There are so many things to do in Moab, Utah it can be hard to know where to start. As local experts who guide many of the adventures available in Moab, and having lived in and played in Moab since the early 1960’s, WE KNOW MOAB – and we absolutely love sharing it with you. are a combination of self-guided tips of places to see, and all the adventures best enjoyed with expert guides looking out for your safety while doing things that you’ve barely dreamed of doing on vacation.
We start our list out with several different scenic byways to explore in your own vehicle. Seriously, north, south, east, or west will take you upstream, downstream, up mountains or over majestic mesas to views you can only find in Moab, Utah.
Next, as if you can’t get enough visual on this incredible landscape of sandstone canyons, fins, arches and arroyos, there is the option to take a scenic airplane flight to see it all in a glance. You can even go in the golden sunset hour – or beyond Canyonlands and Arches to other National Parks in Utah’s Mighty Five collection like Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef!
Like flying? Do it without the small airplane on a zip line over ancient petrified sand dunes! Ziplining in Moab is an adventure not to miss! Or maybe a Hot Air Balloon is more your drift? Do it over a landscape that undulates beneath you like a petrified sea – there’s so much to see and so many ways to see it in Moab!
Take to the river in a jetboat through “The Portal” downstream on the Colorado River towards Canyonlands National Park, or get a Spin and Splash thrill ride near town. There’s even a light show on a calm evening float, if that floats your boat.
Horseback riding in Moab is not “like”, but LITERALLY is riding into an old Western movie set! The “West” is still there, because, as John Wayne said, “That’s where God put it.” He was talking about the cliffs and creeks, rivers and fields surrounding the stables at Red Cliffs Ranch.
If you want to explore Moab’s famous slickrock terrain there are a few ways to do it with rubber wheels instead of steel-shoed horses. What cowboys called “slickrock” is anything but slick with the rubber tires of mountain bikes and 4×4 Hummers or Jeeps!
Hiking is a must-do in Moab, whether on your own to select places inside or outside the National Parks. There’s plenty of hikes, easy, short, moderate or difficult in Arches National Park – but remember you will need a timed-entry reservation to enter the park on your own. Avoid the hassle of timed-entry tickets, finding a parking spot, and knowing what to go see by getting on a guided tour.
Canyoneering (dropping into canyons by rope) is one incredibly glorious way to experience hiking in Moab. You should especially see the insider tip on dropping into the Grandstaff Canyon hike!
And the number one thing to do in Moab, Utah? River rafting on the Colorado River, or the Green River! You can choose from several full-day or partial-day rafting adventures, OR… the number one way to make the most of Moab: an overnight rafting trip where you’ll discover places only accessible by river.
